Explanation of Theme
The theme we've chosen for this website project is Precious' desire for a better family. Although it’s not obvious, the theme of “family” is shown throughout the novel Push. Within the novel, Precious is shown to have three different families, a family of the past, a family of the present, and a family of the future. Just like building blocks, each family contributes to the family that Precious starts to push toward.
The family of her past is the foundation of her desire for a better family. As a child, Precious was raped by her father and abused by her mother. Precious has never experienced the love that a good family should give. This family has a direct influence on her desire to have a better family.
The family of her present is the middle transition from the old family to the new family. This family consists of her friends that she made at Each One Teach One, Alternative School. This is her family that helped her believe that there are good people out there. Although she still has her mother and father within her “family”, Precious considers her friends as her family, more than she considers her mother and father as her family. Her friends helps Precious believe that she can give her children the childhood that she could only dream of.
The family of her future is Precious’ dream, desire, and goal that she eventually hopes of having. Precious has two children, a daughter and a son. Precious wants to give her children a bright future and give them a life better than her own.
Without her two families, Precious may not have developed the strong desire to create a better, loving family. Her desire to have a loving family also keeps her working hard in school. With her education, she believes that she could teach her children to read when the time comes. Precious will continue to push through any life obstacle in order to reach her dreams.
