Quotation Analysis

In the book Push, written by Sapphire, Precious writes “Rhonda look ma, say, I got you. I look up in her eye. She smile. I feel like I’m gonna cry again. Everybody gonna think I’m a punk, crying, crying. I’m not used to this. But this what I always want, some friendly niceness. I say I pay you back. She say I know you will.” (48).

This quotation is mainly about what precious wants. She always wanted to have a family who is nice to her and friendly. Which is the exact opposite of how her parents treat her. She also says that she doesn’t want to cry because she’s used to her peers judging her and that’s why she says after that she isn’t used to people being nice to her.

The significant of this quote is that precious always wanted a good caring family and or friendly friends who would do things for her which she didn’t receive from her parents or her peers at her old school. In the quote, Rhonda said she would pay for Precious without her even asking her to. Then Rhonda says that she knows precious’ would pay her back. This is significant because Precious’ parents wouldn’t have treated her as nice and kind as Rhonda. They wouldn’t have bought anything for precious without being asked to do so and they probably wouldn’t think that precious would pay them back.

She also says that she feels like crying and that she doesn’t want to cry because she thinks everyone will think she’s a “punk.” This is significant because she felt so much emotion from her feelings of friendship from Rhonda and her new friends. But she also didn’t want to cry because she was traumatized by being picked on by her peers at her old school.

Even though Precious has been through a lot of trauma in her life she was still able to see the positive in life. Experiencing the kindness in Rhonda giving her a handout gave precious insight of the goodness in people.
